The Disney Credit Card, in conjunction with The Disney Catalog, created this Limited Edition Villains Chess Set celebrating some of Disney s greatest villains. The sets were produced in 1997 with an edition size of 1937 commemorating the year of the premiere release of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs", which marked the appearance of the first Disney feature villain, the Wicked Queen. The playing pieces were sculpted by Disney artists using character drawings from the official Style Guides for the animated features or from original model sheets used by the animators during the production of the film, then the finished pieces, which are cast in resin, were hand painted and hand finished. The black and white board is finished with a black wood grain frame.
The villains included are: Maleficent and the Wicked Queen as Queens; Chernabog and the Horned King as Kings; Jafar and Scar as Bishops; the Queen of Hearts and Ursula as Rooks; the Headless Horseman as Knights; and Diablo as the pawns. The base of each piece, which measure from 2 1/4" to 4 1/4" tall, is painted either gold or silver to differentiate which side the piece represents. The playing board measures 20" x 20" with the frame adding another 1" to each side. Each piece fits securely into a soft, padded foam compartment for added protection when stored and the whole set is encased in a sturdy presentation box measuring 25" x 25" x 5". A numbered Certificate of Authenticity comes with the set - the set is 137 of the 1937 made. The set and the presentation box are in excellent condition. This set would make a unique and special gift for an avid chess player, or just as an addition to any Disney lover s collection of rare and unusual Disney memorabilia.
