This was the architectural style of chess sets used at competitions through the Austrian Hungarian empire and central Europe during the second part of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century.
This style/design continued to be used as the main one in the coffee houses of Vienna - Austria,world wide famous for their busy chess activity and in local competitions, through the 1950s.
Such chess sets were hand turned from sturdy wood in a good many manufacturing places. The leading one and best known has been the factory started during the late 1800s by a Mr. Jacoby original from Moravia and continued by his son in law, Mr. Nekvasil. the factory closed during the late 1950s or beginning of the 1960s, however its legacy has been carried on by the very handsome and durable sets they made.
The wooden crafted set has very appealing varnish finish on both white and black pieces. all pieces feature dark green paper padding on bottom.
The set is in good condition, there are no broken nor missing parts. some wearing of the varnish in various places and superficial general wearing of several of the pieces. 2019. Sale. |
