He is known for his humorous metal figures, composed of metal parts that have been welded together to create a solid piece.
This Chess set is one of his early works, hand sculptured in extreme details and beauty, each piece is a work of art, no two are alike. Signed by the artist on both Kings, etched on collars. This set is very rare and valuable. The pieces are large (King over 7") on round bases of over 2". The proportionally matching board was also made by the artist out of individual square of alternating silver and bronze colors.
All Michel Laude sculptures parts are made of fine pewter guaranteed more than 95.5% tin and no lead.
Artist became famous fame after completing a large sculpture of a figure on a cross, on display in the Notre Dame de Bercy.
"Pewter is made from an ore, cassiterite. Its use goes back to Greek times when Homer and Aristotle spoke of it, and Pline quoted the Gallic as being inventors of tinning. After the fall of Carthage, pewter was transported by donkey through Gaul for centuries. During the Middle Ages, pewter jugs, ewers, candle holders and dishes became everyday articles".
