Modeled as emblems of war, the Kings as gas masks, the Queens in wheel chairs, the Bishops with pierced crosses, the Knights as catapults, the Rooks as tanks and pawns as foot soldiers gas masks. Made in two tones of leather, with adornments of wood and other materials. Inscribed on the bases "Musso, 1990 Uruguay".

Carlos Musso (1954). Painter, draftsman, creator of installations, set designer and sophisticated builder of symbolic toys and objects, Musso is an artist of varied expression who has been prominent since the 1980s. As a painter he can be placed within the diverse neo-expressionist currents. At the outset of the 1980s, Musso gained attention with a powerfully expressive style in which the splotch, the line, the occasional use of letters and the overwhelming materiality transmitted a world of violence linked to sexuality, death and suffering. At that time he also did environments linked to the hospital world and reflecting the agony of suffering bodies. Later he did several series of paintings, and since 1996 he has been working on a series of highly dramatic human figures... In 1981 he began creating play objects and since 1987 has been working with leather as his essential raw material. Musso renders toys, mini-sculptures, medium-format sculptures and chess sets, particularly emphasizing the combination of excellent craftsmanship, the formal rigor of design and metaphors. |
