A rare antique Stud Travel Chess Set, probably by De La Rue. The set consists of a complete set of 32 stud-type chessmen, with figurine chess characters, printed in black and gold on black and white porcelain studs. The chessmen slip into and are secured by slotted holes in the leather chessboard. The slotted leather chessboard, with black and tan squares, and the chessmen, are housed in a black leather lockable folding case. The set measures 6-5/8″ squares. The studs are 1/2″ in diameter. The outer black leather is in very worn condition, but is still serviceable. The slotted leather chessboard and stud chessmen are in very good condition. This item dates to around 1900. Sold. |
